How AI transcription works in Wave

What is AI transcription?

AI transcription uses a speech recognition model to turn recorded speech into text automatically, with no human typist. Wave adds speaker labels, timestamps, and an AI summary to every transcript, so the text is ready to search, quote, and share.

How do I transcribe a recording with Wave?

Record in the Wave mobile app, the Wave desktop app, the Chrome extension, or a smart watch, or import a file you already have. The transcript and summary appear in your library when processing finishes.

  1. Tap record on your phone, watch, or computer, or import an audio or video file (importing is part of Wave Pro).
  2. Stop the recording. Wave transcribes it with speaker labels and writes a summary with key points and action items.
  3. Fix any word by hand, rename speakers, then search, export, or ask Wave questions about the recording.

Have one file to transcribe right now?

Wave's free transcription tool on wave.co takes an audio or video file up to 200MB and returns a transcript with speakers and a summary, with no account. Files uploaded to the free web tools may be used to improve speech recognition; recordings in the Wave apps are never used to train AI models.

The problems you know too well

Transcripts Full of Errors

Generic transcription tools mangle names and lose track of who is talking. Wave labels each speaker, and custom vocabulary teaches it the names and terms you use most so they come out right.

Audio File, But No Transcript

You have hours of recordings sitting on your phone with no way to search them. Wave turns audio into a transcript with speaker labels, usually within minutes of the recording ending.

Transcription Is Just the Start

A raw wall of text isn't useful by itself. Wave adds AI summaries, action items, and a chat interface so you can actually do something with the transcript.

Features

Everything you need to capture every conversation

Speaker-Labeled Transcripts

Wave identifies individual speakers automatically. Name a voice once with Voice ID and Wave labels that person by name in later recordings.

AI Summaries on Every Recording

Get a structured summary — key points, decisions, action items — generated as soon as your transcript is ready.

Chat With Your Transcript

Ask Wave questions about any recording. "What did Sarah say about the Q3 timeline?" and get an answer that cites the transcript.

Import Audio, Video, and YouTube

Drop in an MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, or MOV file, or paste a YouTube link. Wave transcribes and summarizes it the same way it handles live recordings.

Record From Anywhere

Phone microphone, Apple Watch, Wear OS watch, desktop system audio on Mac and Windows, Chrome tab audio, or a meeting bot for Zoom, Meet, and Teams. One account, every source.

Searchable Transcript Library

Every transcript is indexed and searchable. Find a specific quote from three months ago in seconds.
